On June 30, 2010 Sofia Puerto, PhD, RN, Associate Chief of Nursing Education and Research at the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System received the Registered Nurse in Expanded Role Award from Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki.  Sofia was recognized for her excellence in clinical practice, her innovations in staff development and her leadership skills in coordinating various programs that promote advancement in nursing education.

The VA Secretary's Awards in Nursing Excellence program, established in 1984, annually honors one medical center director, nurse executive, registered nurse in a staff nurse role and one in a non-staff nurse role, licensed practical nurse and a nursing assistant that actively engages in the care of patients at a VA Medical Center.  The award is a highly competitive and sought-after recognition that is only given once to an individual.
