Edna Kokesh, a restorative aid, introduced herself to a non-ambulatory patient convalescing from the after-effects of an automobile accident.  In a gentle, but firm voice she said "I'm here to help you relearn how to get around without hurting yourself."

Three months later that same Veteran got out of bed, dressed himself, grabbed his walker and ambulated to the Community Living Center dinning room totally unassisted.  Twelve years and a couple of thousand in-patients later, this remarkable woman is still at it.  Day after day, week after week, she prods and cajoles patients to lay aside their fears, rekindle their inner courage and take that so important "First Step Forward."

Mrs. Kokesh embodies the high level of professionalism typical of the nursing staff of VA Loma Linda Healthcare System.  Those of us fortunate enough to have come under her care will forever be grateful for the fact. Thanks Edna!
